Prizes given for the youngest concert attendee ever–little Miss Lillian Warren, 4 days old! Montgomery, AL.  Montgomery is like coming home for us.  Tim and Karen Dilbeck pastor a body that hold the official record for the most times asking us back.  We have relationships there that made this event conversational and rich.  Once again, Alabama is good to us.

Baton Rouge was a Blue Renaissance family reunion for us.  We were with Jared & Sarah Hornsby(our old touring buddies), Ben & Lori Kennedy and our dear, dear Sue Fletcher flew in to surprise us.  It has been a long time since we have been together but the connection between us all was fresh and familiar.  We all have much the same journey in ministry and it felt so amazing to be able to relate so fully to your friends. Besides getting to hang with them, we were delighted that when the first event was over, musician types hung out and jammed and shared songs.  It got us thinking about the possibility of a future Baton Rouge multi-artist house concert showdown. We finished our event calendar worshiping at the Baton Rouge Vineyard.  The folks there sang loud and loved well and it was the perfect ending to a really fulfilling journey.  We'll be back, BR.

Our final landing place before attempting the three day journey home was in New Orleans with Kris and Esther Sparks.  We set up for a live recording with them and incorporated bird chirps, kids playing and street noises into the vibe.  We will let you know when Esther's project is completed, because you will want to IMG_0713hear it.  We are in Shreveport, waiting for Barry and Elliott to wake up so we can drive to Amarillo.  Home to the snowy mountains.

The Tour Tabloid

IMG_0662IMG_0660IMG_0661IMG_0674IMG_0663               So far, for us, this tour has been all about the people and we want you to know about them.   It seems like there has been a link between each group of people we have been with – stuff that links us to them and stuff that links them to each other.

In Nashville, we made an instant friend cIMG_0665onnect with the Todd’s, friends of Todd and Ashley Warren.  They accomplished an unprecedented thing by booking a full house concert for us with two weeks notice, attended primarily by folks who had never heard us before.  It’s fascinating how in the KingdomIMG_0666, we can hang out and worship together as if we had known each other for years.  Our first night was amazing with those sweet folks.   Thank you Lori and James, so, so much.

At the Foundry in Nashville, we had an incredible time of worship with some vibrant lovers of Christ.  The intern team there prayed for us before we got started and we pretty much felt like we received more than we gave from that point forward.  That morning, God put His finger on the brother of the prodigal son – the one who stands outside of the celebration feast; resentful and proud, jealous and unmerciful.  Honestly, we ourselves were convicted of this very thing as God used us to minister it to others.  We can’t wait to come back to the Foundry.  IMG_0667We finished up our time in Nashville worshipping with Charla Rainey and her tribe and made a really cool German connection there – have we mentioned that Melissa is German?

Birmingham was a brilliant set up.  Our long-time friends, IMG_0669Jack & Glenda Williams hosted a house concert for us that was attended by a wild mix of surprise guests.  When we were first starting out, Tim & Tamra MayhallIMG_0668 dared to book us at the Crimson Cafe in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and were delighted to re-make their acquaintance.  They knew enough words to sing along with our oldest of songs, a first for us. :)  We felt a real twilight zone feeling at this chance re-connect and have a real sense of God leading us at all times.

Barry’s best friend from high school, Phillip Mahler, hosted a house concert for us IMG_0672in Barry’s hometown last night.  We rarely have concerts that family can ever come to, so it was beyond fun to have our niece, Reece, in the front row, clapping her hands off and groovin’ to the music.  Barry spoke and sang about the Father’s deep, unconditional love for us, with his own sweet dad in the room and it was beautiful.

Our kids spent the week with their grandparents and are having a super time.  They are still passing sore throats back and forth and there are earaches pending, but they are happy to be out of the cold for a few days.  This weekend holds more fun connects in Montgomery, Baton Rouge &  New Orleans.  We are trusting that everywhere else we go, we will feel the same eerie sense of God’s leading and set-ups and we will embrace the adventure with full hearts.

PS  Oh yeah, thanks to our Bovees who provided us with the most rocking travel goodie bags ever–they kept four kids and three adults happy the whole way here!

And they’re off….sort of.

We r in the car racing for Kansas. 4 kids, 1 Melissa, 4 outfits each that we will wash multiple times, Tylenol for the kid with the fever, tons of bungeed down gear and care packages. So what do we do? We stop. We gotta eat, right? Texas Roadhouse is how we kicked off 24 hours of sitting. Snowing at home and we race for some thaw.

This picture is of Elliott at Texas Roadhouse experimenting with a lime. We cautioned him that if he kept it up, his eyes might actually fall out.And they're off....sort of.

We have been working in the studio with our friend, Esther Sparks, this month and that has been a hoot.  She needed some finishing work on a worship project she has been cooking up for a year now and it is almost done.  We will keep you posted and you will love it.

MICHELLE'S PARENTS
Michelle's parents got to town last night!  They are going to live 6 months here in Colorado and the other six in Canada and we are so excited we could screeeeeeeeam!!! We have never had them this close before and it feels like a little bit of heaven on earth.

FREE DOWNLOADS
Make your way to our free downloads page and you can get a peek at some of our recent concert footage.  We have included one here as a sampler.  Tell us what you think.

COMING SOON-DOWNLOAD CARDS!!!
We are conducting an experiment in product sellage.  We have run out of stock of So High and Odds and Ends and will soon run out of Birth.  Rather than reprinting 1000's of copies of cd's, we have put together a couple of compilations (a worship/devotional one and a "best of" collection). We are printing download cards and selling these compliations only as the cards.  We wonder, will people like these as well as they like the hard copies?  We sure hope so.  They should be out within the week and we will let you know how to get ahold of some.  All of your favorite Barry and Michelle songs in one place….yessss!

A happy, happy, birthday.

Last week my (Michelle) dad had an infection that did not respond to the prescribed antibiotics and the infection went septic.  He was inches away from death.  His kidneys had begun to shut down and his dear friend, Dr. John Moorhouse literally saved his life.  I flew out to be with he and my mom as he recovered in the hospital.  When we had a minute alone, I finally broke down and just sobbed all over the place.  There were no regrets, apologies or unspoken words of love that we needed to catch up on, accelerated by the gravity of the situation.  We had no unfinished business between us.  There was just straight up, hurt-so-good love.  He is an amazing man who has loved me well and his pain is surely mine.  It is his 65th birthday today and let me tell you, we are celebrating.  We are celebrating that he is alive!  He is the treasured patriarch of our family and we are so, so thankful for him.

Dad

His upbringing was lacking, so say the least, and he was never given the tools to be a good parent.  Generational brokenness would have destroyed his life, if not for redemption.  When I was a young girl, my dad encountered Jesus and allowed Him into his pain.  He began a transformation that no one imagined possible and His heavenly Father gave him what his earthly father never could.  If you were to hear his story, you would be dumbfounded.  It just doesn't add up.  He should be a mess and so should his children. But he isn't!  Because of Jesus, he is healed and whole.  Because of Jesus, he freely gives the purest love to us.  He has no smell of smoke on him.

I wrote the song, "Smoke" for my dad's birthday 5 years ago.  Give it a listen and celebrate redemption with us this day.  My dad, Roark Russell Thornberry, turns 65 this day. Dad, I celebrate your life with increasing passion and a grateful heart.  I love you.

SMOKE

OH WHEN I’M WITH YOU
I SOMETIMES FORGET
JUST WHERE YOU HAVE COME FROM
YOU WEAR NO SIGNS OF IT
BUT I STILL RECALL THE STORIES
FOR I HAVE HEARD THEM TOLD
HOW YOU WORE THE HEAVY CLOAK OF GRIEF
WHEN YOU WERE FAR FROM OLD

TRAGEDY OF TRAGEDIES
TO THINK YOU WERE BETRAYED
AND ALL THE INNOCENCE IN YOU
TANGLED UP AND FRAYED
LIKE SALT ON ANY WOUND IT WAS
TO BE THE ONE TO STAND
IN FOR YOUR FATHER ALL THOSE YEARS
AS IF YOU WERE A MAN

YEAH, THAT’S THE WAY IT HAPPENED
AND NOW YOU’D NEVER TELL
NO SMELL OF SMOKE GOT ON YOU
WHEN YOU WALTZED RIGHT OUT OF HELL
OR WAS IT YOU WERE LIFTED
BY A HAND YOU DIDN’T SEE
AND THE EYES THAT WITNESSED ALL THAT HURT
SAW YOU LOVING ME

THE BITTER PILL OF ROMANCE
WAS A TRAITOR TO THE CORE
IF YOU NEVER HAVE BEEN TRULY LOVED
BY ANYONE BEFORE
AND PAIN IT IS A CIRCLE
AND TIME WILL BRING IT ROUND
YEAH, BUT YOU DID LEARN TO WALK IN IT
WHEN IT WOULD DRAG YOU DOWN

YEAH THAT’S THE WAY IT HAPPENED
AND NOW YOU’D NEVER TELL
NO SMELL OF SMOKE GOT ON YOU
WHEN YOU WALTZED RIGHT OUT OF HELL
OR WAS IT YOU WERE LIFTED BY A HAND YOU DIDN’T SEE
AND THE EYES THAT WITNESSED ALL THAT HURT
SAW YOU LOVING ME
OH AND BROKENNESS IS FUNNY
HOW IT TENDERIZES YOU
BEFORE YOU MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES
YOU LET IT PASS ON THROUGH.

NOW I’M A BENEFACTOR
CAUSE I GOT NOTHING BUT YOUR LOVE
AND I’M GLAD I CAN’T REMEMBER
WHAT IT WAS YOU ROSE ABOVE
I SOMETIMES FORGET
I SOMETIMES FORGET

Abigail Maynard

More often than not, people are so kind to us.  We have experienced more generosity and kindness from a greater percentage of people than most.  Most times, we never get a chance to be as generous back.  We usually say a heartfelt, blown away "Thank you!" and that's about as good as we can do.  This year, that will be different.  We can feel it.  We get to start with Abigail Maynard.Roll 28 - 32

Here's why we should be thankful to her….since she was a pre-teen, she has been giving us her time, love and help.  She is gifted with children and her parents would lend her to us for weeks at a time, to serve us.  She gave us her spring breaks.  She toured with us in an overpacked minivan.  She held, fed and rocked babies for countless hours.  She played toys and played toys and played toys.
She stayed home when we played out.  She came out one Thanksgiving to help us pack up and move out of our home.  She spent a good portion of her teen years giving to us and living with us. (She is, BTW, one of 3 Maynard girls that have given to us this way – how did we score this?!)Abby in studio

Even though we are in denial about it, Abigail is all grown up.  She has been singing and writing songs for a few years now and has rapidly progressed as an artist.  We have been listening to her for the last couple of years and wanting to encourage her.  We love her voice and writing and believe in her abilities.

Finally, we have a chance!  She is here with us in the snowy woods for about 10 days to record her debut cd.
We want you to get a chance to hear her so check this one out…g.l.u.e.  Thank you Abby and we are so excited to see you launched!  We'll keep you updated on Abby's cd release date.

On a sadder note, we have walked with close friends through some serious grief in the last weeks.  Our friends, Tony Vilgiate and Joy Oram lost their mother, Carol DePasquale after about a year long battle with a brain tumor and surgery repercussions.  Carol was Elliott's Cubbies teacher at AWANA's.  She also reached out to Michelle is a really personal way when Michelle's mom was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of summers ago.  Carol invited Michelle over to spend some time with her, since she had been through breast cancer recently.  She gave Michelle peace of mind and heart as she explained the whole process and reassured her that is wouldn't be nearly as scary as Michelle thought. That visit was a gift.  We lost Carol on New Year's Day.  The memorial was one of the hardest events we have ever sung at, but it pushed our hearts towards our own families with new attention and love.  Tony, Christina, Joy, Ben, Timmy, Dominick, Christopher, Lily, Alex & Steve, we honor your Carol and pray for your grieving hearts.09 - Muller second fall hike 001_2

The Abiding Place, Paddle Boats & a Potential Disaster

Yesterday we arrived at The Abiding Place for a house concert with our friends, Bob & Teresa Nix. The Abiding Place is a retreat and counselling center set in woodsy beauty. The kids got a chance to run around outside and get in a quick paddle boat ride before dinner and they were elated.

As Sam has been rather distracting the last couple of nights, we tucked him into bed before the concert. We were halfway through our first song before we saw him. Sitting in a chair in the middle of the crowd, cleverly disguised as an audience member. Out of bed. Teresa managed to keep him happy for a while until he could no longer be contained and we let him go play upstairs. No sooner was he released than we heard a catastrophic banging that stopped our hearts. Sam had knocked a HUGE clock off of the wall and it was rolling down the stairs at high speed. He could have had his block knocked off.

Inspite of all of that, we had an awesome time with the folks at the concert and even got to hear from them about what God was saying to them throughout the evening. Some were hearing to trust God in a “lean back and enjoy the ride” kind of way. Some were worshipping him for His creativity. One kept hearing the word “adjustment”. Michelle was hearing that the desires of her heart were becoming earth shaking prayers as she began to speak them. It was an amazing exchange and we treasured it.

We ended the tour at Vinelife Church in Huffman, TX. Vinelife is an old stomping ground of ours and such a fun place to finish. We really feel like ourselves there and were able to worship and communicate naturally among friends.

Now we are back in the suburban on the way to a few days off. We are going to the beach to relax and play with our kids. They deserve it…so do we:)!

Maynard Music & Our Version Of The Partridge Family

CIMG0001

Our evening in Kingwood was fabulous as all our other evenings in Kingwood have been!  Abigail and Kate Maynard opened for us and you need to hear them.  Their sisterly bond is evident in the music and Abigail's thinking songwriting has still got us talking.  Watch for her new cd next year!
CIMG0010

In the spirit of family-music, we had our most child-friendly set ever as Elliott, Ivy & Russell sat in on Green. Ivy sang, Elliott played a shaker and Russell played his baritone.   It was a choke back the tears moment for us. Those kids are so awesome.
