Off to Honduras, with Amy in our hearts.

Barry and I decided to leave our 9-5 jobs and pursue music full time in the same week that we found out we were pregnant with Russell, our firstborn.  One might say that was weird timing and not too based on logic, but the decision was made and we were young and excited about all of it.  We knew before Russell was born that we would need someone around to help care for him when we were working, as he would have to travel with us full-time.  We looked around at our friends and wondered if any of them would like to take him on.  Our dear friend, Amy Pack volunteered whole heartedly before he was even out of the womb!  Her job began in April of 1997 and she was our right hand girl immediately.  She strolled him around and played with him when we needed her on site and kept him entertained at home when she wasn't. She did early morning gigs and late night gigs.  She traveled with us and was consistently joyful in her work. She loved Russell and vice versa.  She was his one and only for two years. When she would get to the door, he would start jumping up and down. Life was good for him.

Amy_me_russell

Amy had cystic fibrosis and we hardly noticed.  She was so seemingly unhindered by the disease that we were always surprised when it was time for her usual week or so in the hospital.  We would call her and visit her and wait for her to get out.  Once I even hard-core quizzed her about the condition.  I was so surprised to hear about the stuff she had to do every day just to maintain a somewhat normal life.  Traveling required special travel set ups and routines for her that I had not even been aware of.  I remember when she started talking about going on a Mission's trip to Honduras with her church.  If memory serves me, she pushed her parents incessantly to be allowed to go on this trip.  She was determined to get to do something like this and at long last, was given permission.  We sent her off with prayers and waited for her return.

We soon got news that she was not doing well in Honduras. She was put in a clinic four days after arriving in Honduras and stayed
there in the clinic with the team until it was time to go home. They were there for 8 days and she was
in the hospital for three of them. She was wheeled off the
airplane at DFW with an oxygen tank and was immediately taken to the
hospital in Fort Worth.  She was
there for four weeks. She was really bad, and then she got better, and
then there was a rapid decline and the next thing we knew, we were waiting outside her hospital room.  When I say we, I mean tons of people. Amy was a friend to so many and the hospital hallway was crowded with those who loved her.  Her condition was critical. She had refused any artificial life support system and over the last couple of days, we knew it was the end.  We all hung out in the hallways in shock.  How could this unstoppable life force be leaving us?  I was pregnant with Ivy and had already fantasized about how much a baby girl of mine would adore Amy. I had the unspeakable privilege of singing around her bedside as she launched out into eternity. It was one of the most agonizing, beautiful things I have ever done.

On the day of her memorial, I became starkly aware that Russell and the Pattersons were really only one of a host of families that depended on and loved Amy. The church was packed with children.  Tigger balloons and toys were everywhere.  You have never seen a legacy like this.  Amy lived every single day of her life for other people.  And I want to as well.

This week, Russell and I are heading off to Honduras and I cannot stop thinking about Amy.  Honduras means something different to me than any other country I have visited.  Amy was determined to go.  She wanted to give of herself to that country and that choice cost us…her.  We are going to work with Forgotten Children Ministries for a week and I keep thinking of how happy Amy would about it.  Russell is 13 and knows Amy from pictures.  I have told him Amy's story again and again so that he will understand our connection to this country.  We will be doing what she was determined to do, with her in our hearts every minute.  Jim, Elaine, Stacy…..we honor Amy and we love you. Your daughter is still a force in our life and you must know it.

Barry Hits the Road With a New Cd

Quantcast
Today we are packing Barry up to head out on a three week tour by
himself.  The last time he toured by himself was five years ago, right
after Samwise was born.  His solo debut, 7000 Miles, digitally released
last week and the cd's will meet him in Ft. Worth.  I (Michelle) am
super excited about this project.  It is different than anything we
have done before.  For one thing, it is  singer-songwriter and not
corporate.  We have already received a little feedback from folks who
were confused by the mood of the project, expecting something maybe
more worshippy or overtly Christian in nature. This is different, but
it is good different.  Some of these songs have been brewing for years,
some sprung up during the recording process.  These are nitty gritty
songs straight from life that anyone can grab ahold of. They are songs
about pain and joy, touring and break-ups (hypothetical, have no fear),
love and roots. Barry's guitar work is gorgeous and achey, his lyrics
will move you and turns out, he sings fabulously—all by himself.  So
grab his project at the cdbaby link below and come on out and see him
for yourself for a new Patterson experience.  He will be coming through
DFW, South Texas, Austin, Baton Rouge, Houston and San Antonio, to name
a few.  And you are invited! While you are waiting for him to get there, check out his latest blog about the weird writing process behind "At Least Today" (the facebook song).

P.S.  I will really be needing some adult conversation for the next three weeks, so call me.

Flyin’ Solo

We are excited to tell you about a new season for us.  After a couple of years of full-family touring, we are going to attempt to divide and conquer.  Although we totally love bringing our kids with us, it has proven unrealistic for us to do that all of the time.  Both us of have large bodies of solo material we have been longing to record.  We are each in the process of completing solo projects that we will tour separately.

Barry's project , 7000 Miles, is about 7 working days from completion.  It is a rich representation of the best of his writing and playing and a good dose of his amazing voice. I, (Michelle) am really stoked about this project.  It has been in the works for 7 years and the songs are incredible. There are songs about passion, betrayal, isolation and a whole host of other light topics worth examining. :)  Here is a little sampling, a tune called "Blinds".

Since Barry's project will be completed first, he will tour first.  We are currently booking him anywhere in the South (or anywhere at all in the Continental US for that matter) from the end of April through the first part of May.  He will be doing house concerts and all imaginable venues. He will be easier to host, as he won't have his whole tribe with him.  If you want to book him, please let us know via email at ascensionarts@mac.com. You can follow the completion of this project and the tour in progress at his new site, www.7000miles.com. You can also help support his new endeavor by becoming a fan.

I will be right behind him with a collection of nitty gritty songs about life, love, motherhood and all things applicable to nitty gritty humans.  My dream project, Swan Song, is due for completion in about 12 weeks.  This project will be folky & singer-songwriterish.  I will collaborate with another artist on each track (Darren Thornberry, Mark Bovee, The Blackthorn Project, to name a few) in an effort to cross-pollinate each other's markets.  The best part about this project is that Rebecca Thornberry will be generating a piece of art for each song.  We are working on a super interactive site for Swan song where you can view the art, hear the song stories and see Rebecca working on some of this original art. We will let you know when that site is up and running.  I am currently booking for an October tour and I will give you more information asap. I would love it if you would fan me.

The Trainwreck Congregation

As we promised, we are keeping you in the loop about our work with Esther Sparks.  We, along with a bunch of other folks in our community, have been working on a project with the Sparks for a while now. We are delighted to let you know that the project is complete and has morphed into a website called The Trainwreck Congregation.  It is a gathering place for everybody in need of redemption, so…..that means everybody.  The music set the tone for a site that welcomes frank conversation and mutual encouragement. Check out The Trainwreck Congregation.  Because we love you and want you to hear the music, here's a widget that will let you download the project free if you will pass the word along to five friends or for a donation.

8 Reasons YOU Should Go On Tour

Barry continues to make fun of the fact that I call an extended mostly-house concert trip going on "tour".  I will continue to call it that because I know I am working harder than most big-record-deal-rock stars and I need to call it that.   We have all been talking about what we liked and disliked about this tour.  The dislikes were mostly limited to the lack of space in a minivan, the weird November Texas heat and no hotel swimming pools, so we are all good. We have also been talking about what God did and how He led us, even when we thought it was just our "schedule". As we were obedient to give out what God has put in us, He continually arranged for us to be loved on and encouraged by the folks we were serving.  It is always refreshing to travel around and get peeks into the beautiful communities He inhabits. It's hard for us to describe all the different places and adventures, so we have compiled this special slide show so you can see the beauty for yourself.  You will most definitely want to go on a "tour" after seeing this. 🙂

San Antonio

Pulling out of San Antonio this afternoon after a wonderful night with Dan and Dawne Broadfield. They graciously hosted a house show and decked out their pad for the occasion. They are all eat up in art and our favorite piece on display was this smiling girl by Meagan Cullip.

We are cut from the same mold as those Broadfields and our kids adore each other as well. They head up a ministry called Artlife that we fully endorse. We made them open for us and we loved hearing them live for the first time.

Also thought you’d want to see a picture of Barry making a set list next to a jar of honeycomb and doll parts.

Thanks San Antonio! Warm air and warm folks!

Headed South

Southerners, we are headed your way!  Our fall tour starts October 9th and takes us all the way to the beginning of November.  DFW, San Antonio, Houston, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham & Baton Rouge are all on the docket.  Some cities have multiple shows, so you have lots of chances to come and see us.  We have new music to try out on you.  It's probably time we confessed why we like touring so much….it's because we always receive more than we give out.  It's fairly selfish really.  The folks we encounter inevitably bless us, speak into our hearts and encourage us.  We are praying that what we give out to you might even come close to how you bless us.

Colorado locals, please note the tour kick-off concert next Wednesday, October 8th.  It's your chance to hear us state-side.  We will be trying out some new songs on that crowd to see if they are tour worthy.  Come on out and be a part of the panel.

Here's another little treat for you.  Click HERE to access the live interview Michelle did in Nashville for Women's Radio at the Indiegrrls Conference.  It's a little noisy at first but it is a fun interview as Michelle was the surprise guest that the host knew nothing about.  There's a new song there as well…Diamondback.  Check it out.

All About You-showcase for Womensradio.com @Indiegrrl Conference in Nashvegas

Nashvegas

Sitting in the airport in Nashville thinking about my big weekend with my mom art the Indiegrrl Conference. The conference is an educational forum and showcase opportunity for independent female artists. I met a ton of really neat gals who are all trying to do the same thing I am, so there is definitely a sense of comraderie in place. The highlights of the trip are outlined in the photos.

1) an all female population
2) Tara Kayln Norman, a 15 year old up and coming and her brand new Luna guitar
3)www.weaseltrap.com. Bob and his amazing harmonic capo class.
4) Getting to play for new folks. I played 3 sets, one over streaming radio. My sweet friends, the Todds and Liesa Elliott (Nashvillians) came out as well.

I come away from this conference feeling encouraged that B and I are indeed doing a lot of things right. Also, further convinced that there is something inside of me that other people need. Bring it on. I love music.
